Bread of Life Devotional

By Mario Otero

“And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.” Galatians 6:9 (Amplified)

How often we start well and after a few “rounds” we give up and end up with our hands empty handed, or broken-hearted, just as sick as before but now with a weakened spirit? How many times this occurs to us: we lose heart. This verse in the Bible encompasses such an encouraging and life-saving message. Let us look at this verse together, because it is precisely with “let us” that the Holy Spirit starts speaking here. Although the writer of Galatians writes under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit he says “let us” as a petition to the hearers and to himself. This verse injects faith in the one who proclaims it and the one who hears it. It is a verse for beginnings, for the process and also for the finishing line.

The Word here states we shouldn’t lose heart, we shouldn’t feel bad and weak and finally we shouldn’t let our heart fail. How can we achieve that? God is saying here that as we act nobly and do right, at the right moment He is going to bless or heal or deliver or provide or break through or whatever it is that may be needed. There is one clear requirement for such promise: acting nobly and doing right! This verse also reminds us to the last verse in 1 Corinthians 15 where the apostle Paul implores the brothers to “be steadfast, immovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord” because such work will not be “in vain”. As we abound in the work of the Lord, obeying His word, seeking His righteousness in thought, word and deed we will see that our hearts can be filled with joy at the knowledge of this promise. God is for us, do we now worry about what or who we stand against? The verse in Galatians 6:9 instructs us to have this attitude of hope.

Are we therefore now going to face our challenges in life with this victorious attitude? The challenges described in Galatians 6:9 are so severe that cause one to lose heart, become very weak to the point that you want to give up everything and hide your head six feet under the ground. We must therefore have this predisposition of victory and not feel defeated even before the battle starts. The Bible tells us that there is “a due time” and “an appointed time”. We also know that after everything is over, by God’s grace, having walked righteously we will be reaping a harvest. God appoints a season for each blessing but now we must believe it. Please note that our courage can diminish, this is because our body wants to hide and seek comfort, or “relax” when what we need is to stand strong and courageous, “abounding in the work of the Lord”. How can we maintain the balance and not fall when the storm is coming directly toward us? Ask and it will be given to you, pray to the Omnipotent God who loves you and has all the power to help you giving you strength to endure the storm. So now exchange your pitiful and sorry demeanor for the joy of the Lord!

Our God we thank You that You are a loving Father and the Almighty God able to help us in any situation. We ask you today to give us the strength to press on because we know that as we take courage abounding in Your work we can live a life of victory for Your glory, in the name of Jesus! Amen.
